HOLMSUND, 1:39 AM – At least four cars caught fire at about 12:15 this morning — just over an an hour ago — on Solskenet, a street in central Holmsund, according to Umeå Today reader Matilda Pettersson, who sent photos of the blaze. The flames are continuing right now and “don’t want to die out,” said Petterson. “I suppose the gasoline is making it difficult to extinguish it.”
This comes after a weekend when two sets of car fires — in Ersboda and Tunnelbacken in Umeå — as well as a house fire in Ersboda, led police to suspect that a wave of arson is hitting the city, possibly connected to gangs, drug trade, and revenge against police. One dog died in an Ersboda car.
Pettersson sent Umeå Today this video of the fires and emergency personnel, taken just 20 minutes ago:
Petterson said that before firefighters arrived, she saw someone “running from the fire with his phone in his hand, probably calling the police.” She said the man did not seem suspicious.
Then, she said, “a car came by and honked repeatedly to wake everyone up so that we could call the police.”
“The cops and the firefighters came really quickly,” she explained. “They just put up tape around the parking lot so that no one can get in. There’s a lot of people looking at this outside around the parking lot.” Pettersson said that police officers were asking witnesses for personal information and might contact them tomorrow to investigate further.
“Bless these firefighters and police officers,” added Pettersson.
Pettersson provided Umeå Today with more photos:
UPDATE, 2:09 AM: Pettersson sent Umeå Today a new photo in which it appears the fire is now mostly put out.
Umeå Today will have a full update on this story in Tuesday evening’s post.
